Pros and Cons of Visiting Mallorca in December

Pros

December in Mallorca is pretty darn magical! The island is quieter, giving you the space to truly explore without the summer crowds of July or visiting in August. When planning how many days you need in Mallorca, you may be able to plan fewer days, but still as much as you’ll get around quicker. This is a pro if you have limited vacation time! You’ll also be thrilled to find that many local restaurants and shops are still open, offering a more authentic experience.

Plus, the holiday festivities are in full swing, from Christmas markets to New Year’s Eve celebrations. The Balearic Christmas vibe is a whole lot chiller than the craziness of the rest of Europe which makes it a great place to get the festive Europe experience without the crowds.

The weather is also mild, perfect for daytime adventures without breaking a sweat.

Cons:

While December in Mallorca is still worth visiting, there are some downsides we need to tell you about! Weather in Mallorca in December can be unpredictable, with occasional rain and cooler temperatures, especially in the evenings.

Some tourist attractions and activities may be closed or have limited hours. And while the sea is beautiful as always, it’s definitely too chilly for a swim.

You may also need to rent a car to explore the island so you can have a little time to warm up between stopping points instead of taking public transport or using your feet!

Mallorca Weather in December

Majorca weather in December, and the winter months in general, is mild but it’s not exactly beach weather. This is the month with the lowest average daily sunshine hours per day and you can expect around 5-6 hours of sunlight per day, which is still decent for exploring the island. The skies are generally overcast, with clear skies making an appearance about 30% of the time.

As for rain, December is one of the wetter months, with a 25-30% chance of precipitation. However, it’s drier than the rainiest months of November or the month of October. Still, it’s a good idea to pack a raincoat or an umbrella, even if you’ll be exploring the best sites by car instead of on foot. Overall, the weather is a blend of cloudy and sunny days, making it a versatile time to visit.

Events and Holidays in Majorca in December

December in Mallorca is full of Christmas spirit, and you won’t want to miss out on the action! Here’s a rundown of the best events to catch:

Magical Christmas Markets: Palma turns into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights and Christmas markets. Pueblo Español is a must-visit, offering a magical experience with quality gift stalls for cool Spanish souvenirs and food stands. Don’t forget to sip some mulled wine because, in Caleb and I’s opinion, mulled wine is the best part of European Christmas markets! Another gem is the Puerto Portals Christmas Market, a stylish affair with high-end stalls and an amazing atmosphere.

This year (2024) they will start late November and go until January! So, if you miss them in December, you could still visit Mallorca in January to experience them! We will try to keep you updated with official dates

Ice Skating Fun: I know, you didn’t think you would be ice skating on a Spanish island right? Palma’s main ice rink, Ice Park Mallorca, is usually open throughout December. If you’re near the ports, check out Port Adriano’s ice theme park and Puerto Portals ice skating rink! This is such a romantic thing to do in Mallorca in the winter!

Opening dates for 2024 have not been posted. We’re doing out best to find them out or you ASAP!

Theater and Music: December is jam-packed with theater productions and music concerts. Whether you’re in the mood for something festive or want to escape the Christmas vibe, there’s something for everyone.

New Year’s Eve Traditions: Palma hosts the biggest New Year’s Eve celebrations. At midnight, it’s customary to eat 12 grapes for good luck.

So, whether you’re into festive markets, ice skating, or cultural events, December in Mallorca has got you covered!

Hotels get booked really quickly, especially around festivals, so you want to book in advance! As Palma is a great base, here are our top picks for accommodation near Palma:

For a mid-budget accommodation (our go-to) we suggest this Airbnb as it’s centrally located in the center of Palma, walkable to basically all the sites, and is a traditional, Mallorcan-style apartment with a beautiful balcony! We loved it here but it’s not the cheapest or most luxurious option!

Budget: If you’re looking to save a buck, it’s a bit hard in Mallorca! However, we recommend MHOUSE Boutique Hotel Palma. It’s located in the heart of the city right by the antique train station for a winning location, and even has the option to have breakfast included!

Luxury: want to treat yourself? We recommend the Puro Grand Hotel! The place oozes romance and class with its Arabic-inspired design and charming courtyard (I mean, just look at it!) The location is central and amazing too!

What to Wear In Mallorca in December

Visiting Mallorca Spain in December is all about layering up. While daytime temperatures can be mild, evenings get chilly, so it’s best to be prepared. We recommend packing a mix of light layers, a warm jacket, and some cozy knitwear. Don’t forget a waterproof jacket as December can be one of the wetter months.

For Men: A good-quality, warm jacket is a must. Pair it with some jeans and a pair of sturdy boots. A scarf and gloves wouldn’t go amiss either.

For Women: A stylish, warm coat is essential. Pair it with leggings or jeans, ankle boots, and a cozy scarf. A knit hat and gloves are also good additions.

Packings Tips for Visting Mallorca in December

Here are some tips and things to consider when you are packing to visit Mallorca in the winter!:

  • Footwear: Swap out those summer sandals for some comfy boots or sturdy walking shoes. The December weather calls for something more substantial, especially if you’re planning to explore the island’s scenic spots or hit up the Serra Tramontana mountain range.
  • Layer Up: December in Mallorca can be chilly, so bring a mix of cozy sweaters and lighter tops for layering. A warm, versatile jacket is a must-have.
  • Driving Gear: Closed-toe shoes are not just for comfort; they’re a legal requirement for driving in Mallorca. So, make sure you pack a pair if you’re planning to rent a car and drive around Mallorca.
  • Stay Connected: We’re still big fans of Google Fi for staying connected. If that’s not your thing, a Spanish SIM card is a solid choice. Consider pre-purchasing one on World Sim to stay in the loop.
  • Extra Juice: Between capturing the holiday festivities and navigating around, your phone’s battery will drain quickly. A portable charger can be a real lifesaver. We love this one with built-in cables!
  • Holiday Extras: Considering it’s the holiday season, you might want to pack a nice outfit for special events or dinners. And don’t forget a reusable shopping bag for any holiday market visits!
  • Thermal Base Layer – when Caleb and I were planning our epic 5 week European Christmas market extravaganza trip, we needed to figure out how to stay warm. After much research, we learned that a thermal base layer is essential under your clothes and it WORKS. Here is what I, Taylor, wore. Here is what Caleb wore. The names are funny but these SAVED OUR LIFE for real.
