Coffee Shops in Downtown Raleigh

A plastic cup of nitro cold brew on a counter in a sunny coffee shop with lots of plans

1. 321 Coffee

This multi-location coffee shop is one of my favorite coffee shops downtown Raleigh! They are staffed by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their goal is to employ all in an inclusive environment. They even have polaroids up of the staff around the shop and the atmosphere is so inviting and friendly!

Apart from the fact that they are doing good, their coffee is really flipping good! It’s smooth but bold and they have some super unique seasonal specials. I sipped on the Nitro cold brew on a hot day in North Carolina and I was one happy camper!

We like this spot for more of an “afternoon coffee date” vibe as there is VERY little seating – just one ledge around the wall. The coffee shop is also very small so those seats get taken quickly. The majority of the seating is outside and not covered so I wouldn’t recommend this spot for working. There is also not much in the way of food – just some pre-made sandwiches or baking – which makes it great to chat about the craziness of life over a cup and a muffin!

The location that I love is downtown which is great for a central spot but does make it busy and there is only street parking or a paid parking garage about 2 minute’s walk away for $2 per hour.

Too Long Didn’t Read:

Great mission, central location downtown and unique seasonal specials make this a great date spot.
However, there is only street parking, very little seating inside and not much for food options

Address: 615 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27603.

Hours: 7 am-4 pm Monday through Friday and 8 am-4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

2. 42 & Lawrence

Known for experimenting with unique coffee creations from their coffee lab, this shop is central downtown, right on the corner of Moore Street Park which makes it easily accessible! We love the clean and modern feel of this shop and the customer service has always been excellent! The Baristas are super friendly!

What we SUPER love about this 42 & Lawrence is that they serve COFFEE FLIGHTS (I. KNOW.) and also various mimosas, beer, cider, and wine which makes for a great chill, date-night spot when you’re not feeling a busy bar.

The coffee (and wi-fi!) is strong and they source Larry’s coffee beans, which have a different taste than other shops in the area. The baked goods are delish – make sure to get there early for the cinnamon rolls as they sell out early!

The only downside to this shop is that it is small so there is not a lot of seating and it gets super busy on the weekends. There is only street parking and the coffee can be a little pricey since the location is so central downtown.

Too Long Didn’t Read:

Great downtown location with unique coffee creations such as coffee flights. They serve wine, beer, mimosas, and cider as well.
The shop is very small which can make seating hard and there is only paid street parking.

3. Iris Coffee Lab

This is one of the best coffee shops in Raleigh that is located downtown to get work done. There are tons of tables to work at, very fast wifi, and lots of great food options. They have many breakfast and lunch options beyond just small baked goods like DELISH sandwiches and bagels. The fan favorite is the “hotshot bagel” that is piled with bacon, egg & cheese, scallion cream cheese, and a hot honey drizzle. 🤤

Don’t worry – they have lighter options and also some allergy-friendly gluten-free and vegan baked goods!

The inside is all white and super modern which makes it feel better for working as it’s not as friendly and inviting as other coffee shops where you want to just chill and talk the day away.

There is only street parking available and it does get taken quickly, so keep that in mind when you’re planning your visit.

The coffee is a SMIDGE on the bitter side compared to some other shops but still tasty. I love grabbing a cup and working among all the other “co-working people” at Iris Coffee Lab. It’s very popular with the locals so get there early and curl up with a coffee and a bagel and get to work!

Too Long Didn’t Read:

A great spot for work with lots of seating and awesome food options such as sandwiches and bagels.
Only paid street parking available that does get taken up and the coffee is on the bitter side.

Address: 725 Tucker St, Raleigh, NC 27603.

4. Lucettegrace

Named after the owner’s two daughters, this is not just a coffee shop but also a bakery/cafe with French-style pastries and desserts as well as breakfast and lunch options!

I’d recommend that you skip the sugary drinks here and get a black coffee and pair it with some unique flavored macrons – like birthday cake or pistachio raspberry rose – to add the perfect sweet note! If you are heading for lunch, the fan favorite is the curry chicken salad sandwich that you can even get in a lunchbox to go!

Like all the coffee shops in this group, this is downtown so there is only paid street parking available. It is quite small as well, which makes finding a seat a challenge on the weekends as this spot is beloved by locals like me!

5. Morning Times

One of the most popular spots downtown with the locals, you’ll find people lined up literally out the door at peak times! This little coffee spot has been serving downtown Raleigh since 2006 and has an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients (like hormone-free eggs) and a partnership with Counter Culture Coffee.

The Morning times is a great spot to chill and relax and people-watch or get some work done. They have a large upstairs that is super vibe with brick walls, LOTS of tables to get work done, and an art gallery for when you feel like procrastinating work and get a little culture in ya. The outside area is nice and is even dog-friendly. To note: it’s only covered by trees so check the forecast before you go!

The coffee itself is INCREDIBLE. I literally said “dang, that’s good” out loud to myself when I tasted it. #Noshameinmycoffeetasting game. They also have actual meals such as house-made bagels, croissants, and some lunch salads and sandwiches including vegan options. They have some gluten-free and vegan baked goods as well.

Even though it is called the “Morning Times” it’s open into the evenings and serves beer and unique cocktails. The perfect spot to work, have an afternoon coffee date or evening coffee/booze date!

6. Sir Walter Coffee

Sir Walter is a buzzing, hip coffee shop in the heart of downtown that is always full of people. They started their shop with an “anti-vision” where they wanted to be different than the usual coffee shop. You know the white walls, potted plants, and Instagram aesthetic. I have to say, they totally did it which is why they made this list of the best coffee shops in Raleigh!

They pride themselves on having amazing coffee and have the tagline “Creatively Caffeinated” because they have unique offerings like coffee with ginger and heavy cream. I also love that they have a rotating seasonal coffee menu and even seasonal toast options!

Speaking of food, they have lots of breakfast options and a cocktail menu if you decide to hit this coffee shop up for a happy hour or a post-date-night drink. There is quite a bit of seating inside and outside so you should be able to find a spot whenever you visit!

If you come alone, the wi-fi is fast and many other locals are working here so you’ll be right at home!

7. Bittersweet

Bittersweet is a cocktail, dessert, and coffee lounge that offers an all-natural, local, seasonal menu. You could have bourbon with pie or champagne with cake which makes this a pretty epic place to visit!

Bittersweet has a seasonal menu that changes 4 times a year to highlight local produce and they offer a full coffee and espresso menu with Counter Culture Coffee beans. Their espresso martini is a fan favorite as you can taste the quality of the espresso!

If one of you isn’t in the mood for coffee, they also emphasize gin cocktails (my ❤️) and have over 80 different gins! To note: they do not take reservations so plan accordingly if you have a large party! They recommend coming early.

Heirloom Brew Shop in raleigh Nc

8. Heirloom Brew Shop

Heirloom is a hidden gem away from the busier parts of downtown but still within walking distance to many Raleigh destinations. It’s also right by the train station so it’s a great pre-train meal or stop to get something to go.

Since it is a little out of the way, the vibe is much more quiet and peaceful than other shops. The inside is bright with big windows and lots of natural light. This makes it a great place to work or to have some deep convo over a strong, smooth cup of coffee from local, small-batch roasters.

Aside from specialty coffee and tea, Heirloom is also a sake bar with an Asian-inspired small-bites menu as well as draft beers and unique cocktails. Try the gluten-free mochi donuts for something a little different with your coffee!

With all these unique offerings, this is a must-visit if you want something a little different than the usual coffee shop fare!

Ohhhh the smell of coffee and chocolate at the same time! That is what hits you when you walk into Black and White Coffee inside the Videri Chocolate Factory!

Aside from the epic goodness of the smells, Black and White make some AMAZING coffee! They roast their coffee beans on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and you can enjoy their coffee in a chilled environment with a clean and bright indoor seating area.

On a nice day, grab an iced coffee (and chocolate – duh!) and head to the outdoor patio to connect over a cup. There is also a full coffee bar menu, some great specials and seasonal drinks, and a small selection of pastries. Like most downtown options, you will have to find paid street parking if you are driving here!

10. Sosta

Oh man, this is SUCH a hidden gem that I stumbled upon downtown! The name “Sosta” translates to “a restful break,” which is what the owner, Jerome, wanted his cafe to portray when he opened it. He is originally from France so this made sense as the European lifestyle is all about slowing down compared to us Americans!

Sosta is cute and quiet with lots of places to work or just sit and chat as it is not busy. They really focus on lunch here (the owner wants to be home in the evenings with his family. So European!) and serve some amazing salads and sandwiches – including vegetarian and vegan options.

The wi-fi and coffee are strong and the service is fast. I even saw a woman order a meal and get it in under 5 minutes while I was working there. Again, street parking is all you will find but it’s worth driving around to find some because I truly think this is one of the best coffee shops in Raleigh!

11. Bad Cat Coffee

This is not really a “sit down” coffee shop Raleigh NC as it’s inside the Morgan Street Food Fall. But, if you’re heading out on a day-date or a road trip from Raleigh to Asheville and need to get caffeine to go, Bad Cat Coffee is for you – especially paired with our questions for couples on a road trip! They even have some unique drinks such as their lavender coffee and oat dirty chai latte.

You can even snag some crepes if you are feeling breakfast-y. The crowd favorites are the banana, strawberry, and Nutella crepe and the berries and cream crepe!

Hours: Daily from 8 am-8 pm.

12. Layered Croissanterie

Ahhhh the smell of butter croissants with coffee! This will take you right back to the streets of Paris (maybe. Close enough.) This is more of a bakery that serves modern takes on traditional French Patisserie. However, they also make kick-butt lattes (like their purple matcha latte) and some very unique food options like their cruffin which is a croissant and muffin combo.

They offer seasonal flavors as well, so it’s fun to check out all the different options as they rotate throughout the year. Caleb is a BIG pastry person so we love this little hidden gem in Raleigh!

North Raleigh NC Coffee Shops

13. NoRa cafe

This warm and comfy shop is the local favorite of North Raleigh and is a great place to relax, read, or go on a coffee date. You can read their collection of thousands of books and even buy Dog-Eared booked for a buck! Their coffee is made from beans sourced from their partner, Carrboro Coffee Roasters.

What I LOVE about NoRa is that they serve fresh-made Liege waffles, which are made from brioche dough and infused with pearl sugar. If you remember our weekend in Charlotte, I am obsessed with Liege waffles so being able to get one with my coffee? Obsessed.

Not feeling coffee? They serve wine or beer which makes this a great day or evening casual date spot!

15. Cup A Joe

Cup A Joe is a funky place with a big menu of specialty coffee drinks made from house-roasted beans that is near NC University, which makes it the “go-to” for college students. The locally roasted coffee is on the darker side, so keep that in mind when you are making your decision on where to go.

Something that we love about Cup a Joe is that you can order their beans and they roast them fresh to order and even ship them the day of. Helloooooo fresh coffee goodness!

Benelux Coffee in Raleigh NC, one of the best coffee shops in Raleigh NC

16. Benelux

Benelux was inspired by the owner’s trip to Belgium where he fell in love with the thick, Belgian waffles they serve there. Obviously, you’ll find some kick-butt waffles here if that is your thing! They also roast their own coffee in small batches as soon as it gets to the store which makes from some awesome coffee. They have some unique other otherings as well like their honey lavender matcha.

There is plenty of room to sit and work or talk as it’s also not too loud. Because it is in the busy village district, parking may be a little hard to find. You may have to park and walk, but only a few minutes or so!

18. Jubala Coffee

This is a local chain in Raleigh and we checked out the location on Hillsborough Street, right across the road from NC State University campus. Like the others in this area, you will find a lot of college students working here as it’s close to campus.

This is a great place to work because there is lots of seating – both indoor and outdoor! The outdoor seating is covered too, which is a huge plus (although it’s on a main road, making it pretty loud if you’re trying to talk!) They also have some incredible “real food” options beyond pastries such as their drop biscuits that everyone seems to order!

Their coffee is delish – they serve Black and White Coffee – and they offer a variety of brewing methods, including a pour-over drip bar, French press, and espresso if fancy brewing methods are your jam.

20. The Optimist Raleigh

Okay, I am going to preface this by saying that it made the best coffee shops in Raleigh list because locals LOVE this spot…but I don’t see the appeal. This is one of my least favorite spots mostly because the Wi-Fi has always been really bad for me. It conks out all the time.

HOWEVER, the vibe inside is laid back and chill and they serve beer and wine with a dog-friendly outside seating area. They even have an outside window to order at so you don’t have to figure out what to do with your doggo while you get your caffeine fix. If you’re not going to work, this would be a great spot.

There is free parking in the parking lot but they do share it with other businesses, so parking is still hard to come by on busy days!

Too Long Didn’t Read:

More of a work spot with lots of seating and outlets and a dog-friendly patio with an order window. Free parking as well that is shared with other businesses in the strip mall.

Their chai latte has just the right amount of sweetness and they serve a great Vietnamese Coffee.

Just Outside Raleigh

25. Full Bloom

So, this coffee shop is technically not in Raleigh as it’s in Garner. But, we stumbled upon it one day and we FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. Full Bloom is a local micro-roaster that sources its coffee beans from various parts of the world. They roast these beans in small batches and are dedicated to sourcing quality coffees that are Organic, Fair Trade, Direct Trade, and Rain Forest Alliance Certified. You’ll spot them by the huge mural on their outside wall.

They have a lot of options with honey (you’ll see the theme inside) and some seriously good paninis. This is a quiet shop with lots of tables and space to work. There is only street parking but we usually don’t have a problem finding it as Full Bloom is a little outside the usual “go-to” area. Yet another hidden gem that is SO worth traveling outside the city for.
